Status, Paul is blogging

2008-12-19 10:29:14 by paul

It really is extremely rare that I post a blog entry. Why? Is it because I'm just so busy with other things at university? Is it that I just don't have much to say when it comes to typing down endless amounts of crap? I've never been one for posting much text on the internet; Even In the days of myspace I'd rarely fill in the quick questionaires about how many of the following films I had watched, or what I was doing at the time. I can see updates right now on Facebook about what people did last night / what they are doing right now, but it doesn't sway me any firther to want to tell them what I'm doing. For a change though (since it's the last day before the Christmas holidays) let's imagine that I was actually sat next to a PC as well as doing the usual stuff in my day. These would be my Facebook status updates so far this morning...

Paul is in bed, awake, warm, trying to get up (7.00am)...

Paul just ate his 19th Advent Calendar chocolate...

Paul just ate his 19th 'Countdown Calendar' chocolate (more PC now)...

Paul is having a very strong coffee...

Paul is watching the news...

Paul hopes that Rebecca doesn't get delayed on the train home today, damn Landrovers...

Paul hates stricly come dancing... why are ITV and BBC both talking about it for so long...

Paul has started his project work for the morning..

If I were to continue all day there would be bits about seeing the project tutor, going for lunch, dropping Rebecca off at the train station, going to a college reunion etc. Perhaps it's one of those things that I don't find interesting enough to get round to doing. When I am busy I don't want to stop my train of thought. And when i'm not doing anything... well there's nothing to update you on. Bah! stuck in a rut....

In order to motivate me to get this website of mine working with comments I'm going to ask a new question on my Facebook status for a few days. It'll also fill this site up a bit more since I can post any results I get.

ttyl...

Yes its certainly been a while since i've posted an entry on here. As soon as university started I just haven't had time, what with all this project work and extra curricular events. My assigned project is a piece of mind mapping software. Here is the poster I've just completed...

Scientists discover why flies are so hard to swat

2008-08-29 14:37:46 by paul

Researchers at the California Institute of Technology have discovered why flies are so damn hard to swat. Using high resolution, high speed imaging technology Scientists monitored the reactions of fruit flies to a swatter. Firstly though they had to replace the swatter with a 14cm diameter black disk.

Videos show that when dropping the disk infront, the fly moved its middle legs forward and leaned back, thus shifting its centre of mass, so a push from its front legs would provide ample force to avoid the disk. However, by dropping the disk behind the fiy, the fly moves its middle legs a tiny bit backward. With a threat from the side, the fly keeps its middle legs stationary, but leans its whole body in the opposite direction before it jumps.

Research also showed that it did not matter what the flies were doing at the time, in the space of 200ms the fly could make the adjustments to correct its posture before taking off. This suggests that the fly's brain can map the position of the threat and transform this information into the appropriate pattern of leg and body movement prior to take off.

More information is available at www.dickinson.caltech.edu/Research

For the Computer Scientists, you might want to check out the Grand Unified Fly model: www.dickinson.caltech.edu/Research/Grand_Unified_Fly

A Couple of extra tweaks

2008-08-28 16:51:47 by paul

It seems i forgot to allow different font types such as BOLD / STRONG, italic, and underlined in my code. To be on the safe side i strip out all HTML when submitting these posts, apartf from certain tags. I've allowed these now

RSS Feed

2008-08-28 16:43:41 by paul

I've just completed an RSS2.0 Feed for this blog.
www.pdcleggdesign.com/rss.php

Along with that i've tweaked the blog section a little bit so that requested articles appear in their own page. Later on I'll probably add a comments feature for these posts. It's really typical, I spent a good hour trawling through various font sites to find the correct font for this logo. When I made the icon i simply copied and pasted from a preview. I don't think i'll make that mistake again. The font i used was 'WebLetterer BB' by Nate Piekos

I've been coding since about lunch time so now i think it's time to give this post a go....

A Non Gallery Blog Post!

2008-08-27 17:31:26 by paul

This is the first of many NON gallery like posts. Yay! Good things about this include the ability to add images and links to posts, which aren;t in the gallery, for example here is a picture not on this site, its on facebook...
Guitar (my 7 string )
Anyway, these posts should hopefully get better as i catch all of the formatting errors in my code.

i34 Pub Quiz and Pizza

2008-08-10 14:34:58 by paul

Yet another sunny day in the land of lan. We took a trip out to the local supermarket (sainsbury's) and got lost on the way back. I must say brians sat-nav was excellent :P. Over to Domino's for a lovely pizza (much better than fallowfield). Iate some fish and got a wee bit ill on Friday.
Saturday consisted of a lot of gaming and of course the completion of the 58 song set list, which rock band has to offer, ending the day with a pub quiz in which many grenades were thrown at Wizzo (pictured with the mike). Fun!rn

Oficially the day doesn;t start until 9am, but for gamers, i34 started at the bar! We got a little bit drunk last night and decided to play rck band before retiring for an early night (about 1:30am). Today so far has been quite interesting. We've had the chance to wonder the exhibitor section and Gemma Atkinson was here. Interesting eh?

Good job we weren't in that :P Had a brilliant tea at the cafe, Sausage mash and peas, but £6.50 was a bit on the expensive side. I suppose i best get back to gaming now.
